Surface Recall for Godot
A downloadable addon
Keep per-instance material variants when a model’s named surfaces change order.
A red Shell override can land on Markings after a model revision. Surface Recall captures your material choices before the change, then previews where they belong by surface name. Apply creates one Undo action; you inspect and save the scene yourself.
Free or Full?
Free: capture, preview and restore one selected MeshInstance3D, with the same safety checks as Full. Download Free.
Full — $9 once: capture the saved scene’s current instances with surface overrides and restore that captured set as one reviewed batch. One conflict holds the whole batch.
Both include the original Signal Crate project: three material variants, an unchanged reference instance, baseline/reordered models and editable Blender source.
Check the fit before buying
Tested in Godot 4.7.2 on Linux, Windows and Intel macOS. Supports imported ArrayMesh surfaces with unique, nonempty, unchanged names and external plain StandardMaterial3D or ORMMaterial3D .tres overrides. Imported scene children need Editable Children enabled.
ShaderMaterial, embedded/scripted materials, .res, renamed/added/deleted surfaces and moved source models are unsupported.
Capture → save and close the scene → reimport the model → reopen → review → apply. Closing the scene matters: live reimport can clear overrides. Surface Recall cannot reconstruct choices you never captured and holds if overrides changed or disappeared after capture.
Only per-instance overrides change. Source meshes, materials, model files and import settings stay untouched. The snapshot is readable project-local JSON. The guide covers installation, recovery and the full workflow.
For materials shared across every instance, Godot’s built-in Use External may be enough. Try the Free workflow on your own model before buying.
License and help
Use your licensed edition in personal or commercial projects. Full covers one individual or legal entity and collaborators on its projects, with no per-project fee. Private modifications must respect edition rights; do not distribute the addon as a standalone tool. The original example is separately CC0. Full terms are included.
